Brennan Woods Elementary School – High Ridge, MO
Program: Grandparents’ Luau
The teachers at Brennan Woods Elementary School in High Ridge, Missouri, developed a Promising Practice event that honors grandparents, called the Grandparents’ Luau. The grandparents of second graders at Brennen Woods are invited to a luau every September. The second-grade teachers plan activities for the children to take part in with their grandparents. The grandparents also have the opportunity to see items their grandchildren have created.
The students take part in writing and science activities related to the luau as a way to tie it all together and teach respect and appreciation for their elders. Principle 10 from CEP’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education is implemented through this Promising Practice: engaging families and community members as partners. Students learn to appreciate what the older generations can teach them by including them in their school experience.
The Character Education Partnership (CEP) created the Promising Practices program to foster school improvement by providing a proven framework, professional feedback, and models of excellence.
