The school has made a strong, intentional effort to understand the difference between community service and service learning. Students in all grades volunteer in environmental groups \u2013 Green Squad, Eco-Warriors or Green Team \u2013 to educate, initiate and sustain environmental protection practices. The school has made a commitment to environmental stewardship through activities like seeking grants for recycling receptacles and composting, to creating public service videos. Student-created math video tutorials are posted on teacher websites to assist fellow students with homework. The library Teen Advisory Board plans improvements to programming and the use of library space. The new Tech Squad includes students in grades 4-6 who will support peers\u2019 use of technology in their classrooms and help reinforce the Digital Citizenship lessons they have learned. Grade 6 Student Council is built on the values of respect, responsibility, kindness and cooperative leadership focusing on school and community service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>Woerther Elementary School<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc\">\n<p>Students, staff and families at <b>Woerther Elementary School in Ballwin, MO <\/b>demonstrate social responsibility through community partnerships such as the Circle of Concern food drive, Cents Makes Sense partnership with the Ballwin Police, St. Jude Math-a-thon, Heavenly Hats, Project Linus, Pennies for Patients and the American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart. Character Congress also leads a Community Members Make a Difference program that honors a group of community members throughout the year such as the police department and Partners in Education. Teachers connect service learning projects to the curriculum. For the Caring in Action Service Learning Project, students discuss living conditions soldiers are exposed to during deployment to connect to their social studies unit on climate. Students identify sacrifices soldiers make and character traits they need to possess for deployment. Students integrate communication arts skills by writing letters to soldiers. Every class participates in community service. Students in the Grounds Maintenance class collaborate with the neighbors around the school to beautify the grounds. One example is a painting project that students initiated. Students discovered that a fence on the school grounds needed painting. All of the school core values are written up in action statements so that students not only know the words, but also what the core values look like in action.
