The day began with Cameron, a little girl whose twin stayed home from school because she was sick, in tears because she too wanted to stay home with her mother and sister. Because Cameron was starting the day with a challenge, the students solutioned that they could help her feel better by giving her compliments, and as they went around the classroom circle, Cameron&#8217;s countenance changed. She began to feel better. As per the classroom routine, students went around the circle, and Mrs. Parker asked, &#8220;Would you like to give or get a compliment?&#8221; The students then would choose to give or get. Some would give a compliment and others would get a compliment. During writing lessons, this kindergarten class had been learning about details. Mrs. Parker would highlight and connect to the lessons of details and give feedback on the details in the compliments so all students were connecting to content. When it came back around to little (now smiling) Cameron, she volunteered to give a compliment to someone else.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>St. HOPE<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/exchange.character.org\/wp-content\/themes\/Character\/images\/2.1img.png\" alt=\"P2Conclusion-slider1_img\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc oversix\">\n<p><b>St. HOPE <\/b>in Harlem, New York, not only focuses on thinking, feeling, and doing, but adds assessment to that focus. Scholars are provided with rich opportunities to not only be called scholars, but become life-long learners through Harlem Chats, the SMART (Skills Mastery and Review Time) Spot, and advisory and standards-based grading in order to promote scholar ownership for learning and tracking of their mastery. Thirty percent of a scholar&#8217;s grade in each class is determined by their three habits of mind: 1) prepared to learn classroom, 2) engagement, and, 3) assignment completion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>Brentwood Lower School<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/exchange.character.org\/wp-content\/themes\/Character\/images\/2.1_mainslider2-img.png\" alt=\"P2Conclusion-slider2_img\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc oversix\">\n<p><b>Brentwood Lower School<\/b> in Los Angeles, California, uses 7 core values to help students understand choices. This is often discussed in detail during class meetings. BLS has carved out at least 40 minutes every week in the schedule to allow for class meetings on Fridays. In the class meetings, teachers often discuss issues or dilemmas students have anonymously reported in writing in the Contain-it-Cube, found in every classroom. Core values are used to help students understand the consequence of the decisions they are making and empower them to redirect their actions in the future. The school\u2019s core values are the basis for weekly class meetings and self-examination of behavior and choices in every classroom, every week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>McGalliard Elementary School<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/exchange.character.org\/wp-content\/themes\/Character\/images\/P11Overview_slideimg.png\" alt=\"P2Conclusion-slider3_img\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc oversix\">\n<p>Classroom rules are student-generated at <b>McGalliard Elementary School<\/b> in Hamilton, New Jersey. They center around respect with language that links to the school mission. During classroom meetings, opportunities to share personal concerns and stories help students to empathize and support one another in bad times and alternately, to celebrate the good times together. When problem situations occur, Naomi Drew&#8217;s Win\/Win Guidelines for Conflict Resolution are used.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>Secundaria Biling\u00fce Carlos Darwin<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/exchange.character.org\/wp-content\/themes\/Character\/images\/2.2_slide1-img.png\" alt=\"2.2 almaschraed\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc oversix\">\n<p>The Emotional Intelligence class at <b>Secundaria Biling\u00fce Carlos Darwin<\/b> in Irapuato, Mexico, helps learners understand their feelings, how to be better students and how to relate to others. In addition, they are empowered to talk about issues that are important to them. The focus of the emotional intelligence class is to enable learners to understand their own emotions (and the emotions of other people) in order to respond appropriately displaying the core values in any situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>West Patent Elementary<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/exchange.character.org\/wp-content\/themes\/Character\/images\/2.2_slide2_img.png\" alt=\"2.2 almaschraed\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc oversix\">\n<p>At <b>West Patent Elementary<\/b> in Bedford Hills, New York, students know the importance of being kind. Students are involved in friendship groups, peer mentoring and lead student-coordinated assemblies such as LEAP day. Students from the three self-contained classrooms organized the LEAP day assembly. The goal of the assembly was to think and then write about what they would do with the extra day to be kind, respectful and caring friends. One answer of several answers that showed students\u2019 understanding of the core belief was, \u201cwhen you have the choice of being right or being kind, choose kind.\u201d Based on the results, students created a mural with high school students that showed traits of a \u201cperson of character.\u201d Students are also creating a stop action animation movie using KIIT puppets as the actors. The movie is student-written and produced and deals with bullying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"national_blog_oversix\">\n<div class=\"slide_text\">\n<h4>Alma Schrader Elementary School<\/h4>\n<div class=\"national_school_img_overview\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/exchange.character.org\/wp-content\/themes\/Character\/images\/2.2almaschraed.png\" alt=\"2.2 almaschraed\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"national_blog_desc oversix\">\n<p>The School Leadership Team at <b>Alma Schrader Elementary School<\/b> in Cape Girardeau, Missouri collaborates to include not only academic alignment, but core values conversation in that aligned curriculum, much of which is student-selected. They engage in ethical conversations in all classes. It is also key to Principle 2 where students learn to think (Montrose calls that \u201cveritas\u201d), feel (\u201ccaritas\u201d) and serve or do (\u201cliberates\u201d). Students get involved in serving within the school through the Little-Big Sister program, cooperative learning and a variety of service projects that provide an avenue to express most passions of young ladies.
